When we had our first baby, we were very Poor (with a capital P). And to complicate matters, we had no insurance. Putting money away for the birth and delivery exhausted all our savings. We were in dire straits. We needed any sort of free stuff for new baby that was available. We had no extra money at all. We were extremely poor.

And also make sure that the diaper companies know your due date. These corporations will send you free samples in an attempt to convince you to use their product. And, if you have checked on diaper prices, they are not what I’d call inexpensive, so take advantage of it.

It is also possible to receive free subscriptions to a number of baby publications. The advantage in getting these subscriptions is simple. Baby magazines are filled with ads that provide you with more free offers! Most corporations will provide you with a year’s worth of subscriptions at no cost.

After the delivery of your baby, most new parents get a ton of free offers from portrait studios. Use all of the free photo offers and get your baby’s picture taken often. Then, you may use these free pictures as gifts. Grandparents, aunts and uncles appreciate good pictures at Christmas. And you got them for free!

New Baby and You

When you have a baby, if it’s your first, it feels like your world has changed and nothing will ever be the same again.  It is difficult to adjust to your new life with a new baby, but here are some tips on how to enjoy your first few months together.

Some people don’t want any pressure, so don’t make any plans you might find difficult to keep. Get up with your baby, sleep when they sleep and don’t expect too much from yourself.

Others like some structure, so make some simple plans, organise things that aren’t too early in the morning so you don’t feel pressured.  A new baby needs a lot of care so you will have preparation to do before you go out, like checking the changing bags has nappies, wipes, spare clothes.  You will need drinks and snacks if you are breastfeeding or milk and bottles.

If you feel like you need company and support there are many organisations that can provide this.  Your health visitor should be able to tell you about local mother and baby groups you can join, if you are near a sure start centre they normally have lots of activities and groups you can go to.  Your local library normally runs story time or singing groups and they quite often will have information on other local groups.  NCT also runs groups and activities around the country, you can find them online. 

If you have friends at home with their own new baby, arrange to meet them or invite them round; don’t worry too much about tidying up or preparing a three course lunch or baking cakes.  Your friends are in the same position so ask them to bring a dish if they are coming for lunch or just buy cakes or biscuits.

If your new baby is not a good sleeper or cries a lot you might feel like you need a break or to catch up on some sleep, ask a family member or friend to sit with the baby or take them out for a walk, while you rest.

A way to avoid some of the stress and pressure of a new baby is to make you sure have got lots of things done before the baby is born.  That way you only have to concentrate on caring for the baby and everyday household jobs.  You could think about making up some meals and freezing them before the baby comes so you have some proper healthy meals for the first few weeks that you only need to heat up.

If you are online take advantage of internet shopping, in particular supermarket shopping.  You could set up an account and have a practice before the baby comes.  These accounts quite often save what you have bought before, so once you have done you first shop the ones after are really easy you just click from the list already there.

First time parents have a ridiculous amount of new ideas to think about, so to be as organised as possible before the birth of the baby is not just helpful, but essential.  As a new parent, and not knowing whether to expect a girl or a boy, it can be difficult to decide what can be bought before the birth.  The list that follows has been compiled by new mum’s, and is designed so that these items can be bought before the baby is born, leaving more time to enjoy those first months of mother (and father) hood without the added stress of shopping for essentials.

The nursery should be decorated with baby in mind and contain the furniture s/he needs such as a wardrobe and changing mat.  A pretty lampshade, some pictures and a mobile above the cot are ideal decorations to keep baby amused and happy in a nurturing environment.
